Name Perceptions - What’s In A Name?
The importance of a name cannot be underestimated. When we meet new people, the first thing we do is introduce ourselves by name. When you hear about someone else, you often hear about them by name. You may think of people with a particular name as having certain similar characteristics. All these factors, and all the people we know by a particular name often influence our opinion of that name.
Numerous psychological studies have been performed that tried to measure peoples perceptions about names, and link those perceptions to the actual characteristics exhibited by those people. Indeed, many of these studies did find that people have pre-conceived ideas of what characteristics a particular name has. This implies that people may have feelings about you simply by hearing your name. How someone treats you may be a factor of other people they know with a similar name, or other people they have heard about with your name. It’s not uncommon to hear parents reject names for their upcoming child simply because they know another person with that name that they dislike.
Before choosing a name for your child, it’s a good idea to find out what people think of that name. Unfortunately, it’s often a mystery what people think of a particular name, or how they might judge someone with that name. There are a number of books available that try to correlate names to characteristics, or you can turn to the internet to try and find out what people think of a particular name. Even if you do not think that a person’s name can have any affect on how they are treated, it can be both interesting and entertaining to see what other people think of your name.

Feeding Your Two Month Old Baby
Breastfeeding is healthy for you and your baby. Here are some reasons why breastfeeding is best:
o Breast milk can help protect your baby against illness. It can protect her from allergies. The American Academy of Pediatrics says it’s good for babies to be breastfed for the first year of life.
o It’s best for mom. Many breastfeeding mothers lose the weight they gained while pregnant faster than mothers who do not breastfeed.
o It creates a bond between mother and baby. You can learn your baby’s signals faster.
o Breast milk is easier to digest than formula and you don’t have to prepare bottles or formula. Breast milk is always ready. Babies do not become constipated from breast milk.
Each baby has her own feeding schedule. Some babies need to nurse more often than others do. In general, nursing babies need to be fed at least eight to 12 times in a 24-hour period. That means feedings every two to three hours. If your baby has not fed for several hours and then dozes off after only a few minutes of nursing, gently wake her to encourage her to continue nursing. Try to help your baby feed until your breasts are emptied of milk or at least 15 minutes from each breast.
If you have any questions or problems with breastfeeding, talk to your doctor, nurse or WIC breastfeeding counselor. To learn more about breastfeeding, you may call La Leche League at 1-800-LALECHE or visit their Web site at http://www.lalecheleague.org/.
Follow your baby’s lead. Babies tend to get as much milk as they need when you let them nurse when they want and for as long as they want. The more your baby nurses, the more milk you will produce. Your milk supply will keep up with your baby’s demand.
How do you know when your baby is hungry? Here are some hunger signs to be aware of:
Early hunger signs:
o Head moves toward voice, mouth opens
o Lips smack, tongue reaches outward
o Hands move “randomly”
o Fists find mouth
o Infant begins fussing
Late hunger signs:
o Brow furrows
o Mouth widens, head moves quickly from side to side
o Fists clench, seeking the mouth
o Baby cries
Do you think that your baby is too young for you to enjoy interacting with him? Think again. There is a lot you can do, using baby sign language, that will be fun for both of you.

Choosing the Right Baby Name!
There are many things you have to do once you find out you are having a baby. One of those things is choosing a name for your baby. Some people know right away what they will name their baby, others struggle until the last minute to find a name. The last thing you want is to rush in choosing your baby’s name and regret the decision later on. For children their name is a very important factor on how they are treated at school. How many times have you know a child be bullied for their name? Or found out one of your friend’s uses their middle name because they hate their first name? A badly chosen name can lead to years of grief for a child.
There are some basic rules that you should follow when choosing a name.
1. Don’t feel the need to choose a very unique name, such as made up ones. Many people are tempted to do this as they feel it will make the child stand out from the crowd and make them feel special. However it can often be frustrating for a child when people are unable to pronounce their name. Or even worse if fellow class mates find the name funny and decide to make fun of it.
2. If you want to use an unusual name for your child balance it out with a normal name. So you would either have a unique name for the first name and a normal name for a middle name, or vice versa. This then let the child chose which name they prefer to use, they may love having a unique name to stand out from the crowd, or they can use a normal name if they are a little shyer.
3. Check the initials of the names you chose, if it spells out anything especially funny words (to children) then you can guarantee children will pick up on it and use it as a nickname for your child.
4. Find out the nicknames of the chosen name, often a nickname is far less preferable to the original name, and people will frequently use a shortened name over the original name.
Your simple guide to choosing a baby name was written by James Smythe. Once you have chosen you baby name don’t forget you need to have all the accessories for your new born, Get and prams or push airs from Quality Prams

Naming your Baby afterwards a Saint
Naming your baby is one of the most important and challenging thing to do before the baby is
born. According to the Catholic Church, if you name your baby after a saint, the saint will
intercede and help his namesake throughout the baby’s life. In effect, the saint will be your baby’s
patron saint for the rest of the baby’s lifetime. Here is a very brief list of possible saint names for
your next treasured child.
Boys
Adrian. There are at least ten Saint Adrians throughout history. One of them was called
Adrian of Nicomedia, who was a pagan and bodyguard in the royal court of Nicomedia. He was
so impressed by the courage and faith of the Christians being executed, he converted and became
a Christian. He was then arrested by the same court he worked for and executed. He is the patron
saint of soldiers and prison guards and helps intercede against the plague. Here is a strong name
to please any man, with several saints to choose from.
Benjamin. Saint Benjamin was a Persian who loved to preach to the people. He would
preach anywhere to anyone who would listen. He suffered in jail, was released, and told not to
preach again. But he did, and was killed for it by being impaled on a stake. Benjamin means ’son
of the right hand’. Benjamins can be Benjie when they are young, and Ben as they mature. It is a
name to be be proud of.
Christopher. Most Catholics are familiar with the Saint Christopher medal; a picture of
St. Christopher carrying Baby Jesus across flood waters to safety. Not much is know about the
real man, however. He was a third century martyr who helped people cross a dangerous stream,
including Jesus. He is the patron saint of many things including travelers, drivers, epileptics,
Germany, Spain, cab drivers, gardeners, bachelors, and watermen. It will never go wrong to name
your child after this saint.
Drogo. A masculine sounding name with a great story behind it. Saint Drogo was Flemish nobility, to gave up all his worldly possessions to become a shepherd and go on many pilgrimages to Rome. He ended his life as a hermit, living on water, barley, and the Eucharist. He is the patron saint of deaf people, orphans, shepherds (naturally), ill people, deformed people, and coffee houses.
Francis. You can’t go wrong naming your baby Francis. There are at least forty-five Saint Francis. My favorite is St. Francis of Assisi, a formerly rich and riotous man, who gave up all his possessions after he found God, and founded the Franciscans. He loved to live with the animals and birds and composed music for the glory of God. He worked with lepers and the sick, and sent food to thieves. He is the patron saint for all of nature; the birds, the animals, the environment and for peace.
Kevin. Saint Kevin was a bit of an odd duck. He preferred the company of animals to humans, and many tales are told of miracles to do with animals or birds and the saint. He lived as a hermit and ate nettles and wore skins. He prayed all day and founded a monastery. Saint Kevin is a saint worth looking up just to read about his adventures with animals. He is a patron saint of Ireland, and Dublin in particular.
Girls
Angela. Six Saint Angelas grace the Catholic Church. One who stands out is Angela of
Foligno, an Italian wild child, who eventually saw the light and became a visionary and mystic for
God. She was born of a wealthy family in the 1200’s, married young, had many children, and was
known to be a wicked woman. In 1285 she had a revelation, and changed her life around,
becoming a Christian woman. She was known for her mystic writing, her charity and humility; she
is the patron saint of widows and against temptation.
Brigid. Saint Brigid of Ireland is one of the patron saints of the Emerald Isle. She was
born to royalty, but refused to marry and instead started a group of convents in Ireland. She loved
to travel and spread God’s word wherever she went. She is highly regarded in Ireland and has a
colorful history to read about. She is the patron saint of Ireland, babies, dairy workers, mariners,
milkmaids, sailors, midwives, blacksmiths, poets, travelers, and many other groups. Naming your
baby Brigid is a great honor.
Clare. Saint Clare of Assisi is the patron saint of the church where I grew up. She was
born of royalty, and had the opportunity to hear St. Francis of Assisi preach when she got her
calling. She founded the Order of the Poor Clares and established them wherever St. Francis
established the Franciscans were. They depended on charity completely. Her order still exists
today. She is the patron saint of television, eyes, good weather, and telephones.
Elizabeth. There are at least twelve saints named Elizabeth. One of my favorites is Elizabeth Ann Seton, the founder of Catholic schools in Massachusetts and Maryland. She came from a strict Episcopalian family, and married a wealthy man. By the time her husband died, and his business had failed, she was living as a poor widow with five children to support. To make ends meet, she started the schools, and converted to Catholicism. She is the patron saint to help combat in-law problems, widowhood, and the Dioceses of Shreveport, Louisiana.
Hermione. A popular name with the Harry Potter set, this is actually the name of a saint, Saint Hermione, a daughter of Philip the deacon. She was a prophetess, and a martyr.
Julia. A beautiful name, there are several saints named Julia. One was Julia Billiart, the woman who started the organization called The Sisters of Notre Dame, which has a mission to educate Christian girls. She was born in a poor family and dedicated her life to learning about her religion and teaching it to other women. She is the patron saint of poor people.
If this list intrigues you, consult with a book about saints in your local library, or look on line for more information. There are hundreds of saints to learn about, and names to choose from for all people. Why name your baby after a soap opera actress or a favorite perfume? Name your child with a name that has some history, and a chance for a little extra help from up above!

Scrapbooking Baby’s Name
When a baby is born there is a wealth of photos and treasures with which to scrapbook this very special time. Ideas abound for ideas on how to present the scrapbook for the big event. Traditional layouts include pastel tones of pinks or blues, ribbons, buttons, and whatever other embellishments are fitting for the occasion. Beautiful craft decorations of miniature rattles, shoes, and teddy bears all find a perfect home in a baby’s album.
It is not unusual to find pages showing a birth that include baby and various family members, baby’s first bath, and many more such special first moments in the baby’s life. Not so commonly presented is a page celebrating the baby’s name. Naming your baby is a very important decision and so deserves a place of honor in any album celebrating the life of a child.
Along with a photo of baby the chosen names will be the main feature on the layout. Make sure to include first and middle names, as well as the surname. Often parents are choosing to hyphenate their names when marrying. Including the baby’s surname will provide a ‘soft’ but clear record of your baby’s legal name for the sake of visitors, family, and friends.
Be sure to add in journal notes about the names. What significance do the names have? Maybe the names were chosen because of family tradition. Perhaps it was because of a particular family member, so write a brief story about why you chose to honour the relative in this way, and perhaps include a small photo of the person. This is especially nice when the person the baby is named after has passed away prior to the birth. Your child will love to see the person for whom they were named. Perhaps there are extra details about the person you might wish to include. For example: the way their eyes are similar or how they laugh the same way. If the namesake is living, you could include their reactions to having a child named after them. More personal would be a little note written by that person, mounted on the page.
Write about what the names mean. Is there a history behind their use? What is the meaning of the name? Baby naming books and the internet will provide Biblical meanings as well as those that derive from different languages and cultures. You’re likely to find a variety of meanings, which adds a fresh point of interest to the journalling.
Some times parents like to spell children’s names with a flair for individuality. Other names may be available in several variants depending on the origin. For example: Alicia is of Old German origin and means ‘noble’ while Alysia comes from Greek and means ‘entrancing’. Alesia is a further Greek variant, but meaning “help/aid”. The reasoning behind the variant selected could also be included on the page. You may also want to include an explanation or phonetic key as to how the name is pronounced. This is great for names that are unusual or which originate from different languages.
Alternative names mum and dad considered also make for a nice inclusion. If the baby’s sex was unknown prior to birth then this could also encompass names picked out for either gender. A note such as, ‘If God gave us a boy your name would have been Samuel’ records a lovely detail which could well be forgotten in future years.
Providing a ‘baby name’ page in the child’s album helps complete the story that is the life of the infant. Remember all the love and care put into choosing the name and let that flow into a beautiful scrapbook page which your child will treasure through into their adulthood.
